More time for legal strategy and clients
The Law Office of Jim Pagano is a Colorado personal injury firm headquartered in Boulder, serving clients across both pre-litigation and litigation matters. Jim Pagano founded the firm in 2017.
Before starting his own practice, Pagano worked at a firm where part of his job was telling potential clients their case didn’t meet the firm’s fee threshold. It never sat right with him. When he built his own firm, he replaced that threshold with this question: Can the firm help the individual and add real value to their case? If the answer is yes, the firm takes the case, regardless of its size.
The firm’s “no case too small” philosophy, however, created a difficult trade-off. Lower-value soft-tissue cases often demanded more work than higher-value matters, yet yielded a smaller return. Insurance companies, eager to avoid a jury trial, tended to settle the bigger cases quickly, while fighting the smaller ones hardest. With a small team, reviewing the sheer volume of records associated with each case was time-consuming. Worse, it made it easy for important details to stay buried in a PDF, or for missing documentation to surface only once the team was already deep into preparing a demand or negotiating with an adjuster.
To help make his firm more efficient, Pagano first brought in EvenUp for demands. With hands-on guidance from the EvenUp team, that initial use case expanded into EvenUp’s Proactive Personal Injury AI Platform™. What started as demand support evolved into proactive AI woven into every stage of the case lifecycle, giving the firm a way to actually live out its founding philosophy.
Before EvenUp, The Law Office of Jim Pagano reviewed files manually, making it easy to miss an absent bill or medical record among the hundreds of pages of documents. Conversations with clients about negative facts of their case often happened later than they should have, sometimes not until right before a demand went out or a settlement offer was on the table.
EvenUp solved this by consolidating bills, records, and treatment status into a single, working view with the Medical Management™ Treatment Timeline. The Missing Docs Check flags mismatches between records and bills automatically, and AI Playbooks™ surface negative facts and missing context as soon as there’s enough documentation to run them. That gives Pagano more time to talk to the client, get clarifying context, and prepare for the adjuster’s questions well before those issues can define the case.
EvenUp tells us what a case is missing. That's a gem of a feature.

It also works in the other direction. AI Playbooks™ surface a client’s strengths just as objectively as their weaknesses, like the absence of any treatment gaps. This gives Pagano something concrete to point to when a client feels discouraged about their case. Seeing the strengths of their case, such as the absence of treatment gaps, encourages them to keep fighting.
Pagano’s firm has a track record of using EvenUp to uncover settlement value that other firms left on the table. One trucking accident case provides an example: a large advertising firm had already negotiated the case to a $50,000 offer and was encouraging the client to accept it, but the client instead brought the case to Pagano’s firm. EvenUp identified medical providers whose records hadn’t yet been added to the file. Once the team completed the record and put together a demand, the insurance company came back with a $500,000 policy-limit offer, ten times the original number, on the same underlying facts the prior firm had already reviewed.
AI Playbooks™ also flagged something the prior firm had missed entirely: a second defendant, not the driver named in the traffic accident report, who had played a role in causing the truck’s actions that led to the crash. Pagano’s team pursued that defendant separately and secured an additional six-figure settlement.
The beauty of EvenUp is that it’s a brand-new, unbiased set of eyes on cases another firm has already worked. AI Playbooks help surface what hasn't been done yet, like witnesses who haven't been interviewed or providers you can get more records and bills from. It's made picking up a case from another firm quite attractive, because it's clear there's more case value to uncover.

Companion™ Helps Pagano Scrimmage Against the Adjuster Before Negotiations Begin
Before EvenUp, preparing for an adjuster conversation meant Pagano had to search through medical bills and records for the facts he needed on the fly. That preparation could leave Pagano discovering important context late, sometimes after an adjuster had already formed a negative view of the claim.
EvenUp solves this with Companion™, which lets Pagano ask direct questions about case strengths and weaknesses, medical bill totals, treatment status, missing documentation, and reasonable settlement value, all backed by line-level citations showing the relevant source material. That gives him a fast way to identify weaknesses in a case that the adjuster may be focused on and to prepare a grounded response.
Pagano uses Companion™ alongside AI Playbooks™ to strengthen his negotiations with adjusters. After AI Playbooks™ surfaces the negative facts of a file, he puts them in Companion™ for help countering the arguments adjusters might use to devalue the case.
In one case, a client with a brain injury had sought treatment at a facility that also served individuals dealing with substance abuse. AI Playbooks™ flagged how an adjuster would likely read that record. Instead of getting caught off guard by the argument mid-negotiation, Pagano researched the facility, spoke with his client about what had actually happened, and gathered additional context. Companion™ helped Pagano redirect the adjuster and overcome the adjuster’s doubts about the case.
Using Companion alongside AI Playbooks is a good way to basically have a scrimmage against the adjuster. It helps you make a plan so you're strategically taking the negotiation in a direction that you want, rather than trying to prevent it from going where the adjuster wants it to go.
Jim Pagano
Before EvenUp, Pagano estimates he spent roughly 80% of his time on manual record review and only 20% on the actual practice of law. Today, that ratio has flipped. He now spends about 20% of his time uploading records in EvenUp and reviewing its outputs, and the remaining 80% on legal strategy and client conversations.
With EvenUp, I have more time and energy to think, be more creative, and do the more human things. With the robotic parts of the case being handled by a robot, it gives me much more time and energy for the human side of being a lawyer, which is talking to people about their life and their experiences.
Jim Pagano
With more time in the day, Pagano’s firm can more fully live out its founding mission of helping as many people as possible, regardless of case size.
That extra capacity extends even to people whose cases the firm doesn’t take. With hours back in his day, Pagano has more time to talk with individuals who reach out for help, even if his firm can’t retain them as clients. He helps injured people understand when to speak with an adjuster and gives them the confidence to avoid a rushed decision. These phone calls, fueled by a desire to help, return some of the firm’s strongest word-of-mouth referrals.
Overall, EvenUp’s AI has allowed The Law Office of Jim Pagano to spend more time on the human side of law by developing authentic relationships with clients and the community.
AI makes you a better human, and that's the exact opposite of what I think most people might assume.
